ZeroAvia Strengthens IP With 9 New Patents

Total Of 45 Awarded For Hydrogen-Electric Aviation Systems

ZeroAvia, an American/British developer of hydrogen-electric aircraft engines and systems, announced that so far this year the company has been awarded nine new patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the United Kingdom Patent Office, bringing its total intellectual property portfolio to 45 patents, with almost 250 additional applications still in process at the patent office.

The company’s most recent U.S. patent covers an integrated hydrogen-electric engine, critical for the development of a modular multi-MW hydrogen-electric engine for the ATR and Dash-8 aircraft families. The design concept is related to advanced and novel integration concepts that form the ZA2000, a power-dense zero-emission aircraft engine the company intends for 40-80 seat regional turboprops and jets.

Additional patents received cover novel innovations in cryogenic management systems, thermal regulation for fuel cell systems and fuel cell catalysts using platinum nanoparticles. Another relates to a refueling system for aircraft powered by hydrogen fuel cells that uses a thermoelectric generator to provide electricity for aircraft systems.

ZeroAvia’s patent portfolio now covers all key subsystems of the engine and aspects of its integration with aircraft. Along with the company’s trade secrets, particularly for innovations in materials used in fuel cell systems, ZeroAvia has a very strong IP portfolio, perhaps the most advanced in relation to hydrogen-electric aviation powertrain technology.

Securing the IP on engine systems has been part of the company’s strategy since its inception. With both Boeing and Airbus furthering their plans – and their IP – for developing hydrogen-ready airframes, the work ZeroAvia has done will enable the rapid progression through the design phases and create commercial opportunities beyond the primary aero engine market.
