FAA Poised To Issue Boeing 757 Safety Directive

Corrosion On Tail Parts Could Lead To Loss Of Aircraft

The FAA has proposed a mandatory safety directive for Boeing 757s due to a corrosion issue in the airplanes' horizontal stabilizers. The document would require inspections of all domestically-registered 757s, and could be expanded to cover foreign-flagged airplanes as well.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the FAA is looking at the components because the 757 horizontal stab has a screw-style actuator similar to one that failed on an Alaska Airlines MD-83 11 years ago. That airplane went down off the coast of southern CA, fatally injuring all 88 people on board.

Boeing has issued updated service bulletins calling for repeated inspections of the ballscrews. The FAA's proposed directive would require the immediate replacement of the affected parts.

Boeing said it is cooperating with the FAA on the issue and supports the proposal. The directive would affect some 700 757's flying for U.S.-based carriers.
