Thirteen Lost In Zambia Military Aviation Mishap

Went Down Shortly After Take-Off

Thirteen people -- 12 Zambian soldiers and a civilian -- were lost Wednesday when their RC Y-12 went down shortly after taking off from Lusaka. There was no immediate indication as to the cause of the mishap.

"They took off quite okay," a military source told the Lusaka Post. "In fact the Y 12 aircraft, which is a routine food re-supply plane, started off... from Lusaka to Livingstone then connected to Mongu. After Mongu it was to fly back to Lusaka. It took off but then it just dropped right onto the runway killing all the thirteen officers on board."

Details on the circumstances surrounding the crash were hard to come by -- and Zambian military officers offered few specifics.

"A board of inquiry has been instituted to determine what caused the accident and more information would be given after that," said Zambian military Capt. Mutale Kasoma.
