ANN Asks AOPA's Gary Crump: Are More Pilots Flying While Intoxicated?

Nearly all members of the Aero-News staff noticed it, at almost the exact same time: "Gee, we sure are seeing a lot of drunk pilot stories lately..." Is it that more pilots are choosing to fly while intoxicated, or simply that those pilots are now being noticed more?

While the news reports cannot be ignored, AOPA Director of Medical Certification Gary Crump (right) says the answer tends towards the latter.

"I'm not really certain we can say there's an increasing prevalence of bad decision making among pilots... [but] two or three accidents that are lumped sort of close together, in a relatively short period of time, tends to exacerbate the attention that type of incident tends to get by the general population," Crump tells ANN's Jim Campbell in today's ASR.
