Hartzell Gets FAA Type Cert For First Electric Engine Prop

Tested On BETA Technology’s Proprietary In-House EPS

Hartzell Propeller announced it has received FAA Part 35 Type Certification for the first propeller specifically designed for AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) aircraft. Hartzell worked together with the BETA Technologies Alia aircraft equipped with BETA’s proprietary in-house electric propulsion systems to design and conduct all testing of the propeller.

The certification is significant for demonstrating the maturity and certifiability for the commercialization of the AAM industry and next-gen electric aviation in general. It represents an important practical step forward for the industry’s ability to meet the growing demand for safe, low-cost, and efficient urban and regional air transportation.

JJ Frigge, President of Hartzell said, “Hartzell Propeller is very pleased to work with BETA Technologies on this AAM breakthrough development. Our design specifically for BETA Technologies is a five bladed, carbon fiber, ground adjustable fixed pitch propeller that will have future applications for the entire AAM industry.”

The Hartzell propeller is the first to secure FAA certification specifically for integration with electric propulsion systems. Such systems generate a wide range of loads and conditions that the propeller must be capable of handling, from regenerative braking to startup. Hartzell performed thousands of hours of testing on the ground and inflight over a four-year period to confirm the propeller exceeds the performance and safety standards of Part 35.

Kyle Clark, Founder and CEO of BETA Technologies said, “With its decades of experience across all types of aircraft, Hartzell Propeller has understood from the beginning the unique challenges and opportunities of electric aviation. Their engineering precision and deep certification experience have assisted us as we bring this aircraft to market and walk through our own certification steps.”

“We’re proud to have been their counterpart on this project, and look forward to getting this certified propeller in the air as we continue the process of certifying our electric engines, as well as our ALIA CTOL and VTOL,” he added.
