Downed Navy Pilot To Run For Office

Shane Osborne Wants To Be Nebraska's Treasurer

The Navy pilot hailed as a hero when his EP-3 collided with a Chinese fighter and made a forced landing on Hainan Island four years ago wants to be a money manager -- Nebraska's money manager.

Shane Osborn (right) vaulted to national prominence when he beat the odds, safely guiding his stricken aircraft to an emergency landing on a Chinese island after a 7,500-foot post-collision uncontrolled dive. None of the 24 people aboard the aircraft was hurt, but they were held prisoner for eleven tense days.

He's now running for Nebraska State Treasurer, facing incumbent Ron Ross in a May 2006 primary election.

Osborne, 31, had reportedly been thinking about a run for the US Senate. But after talking it over with his wife and young children, he said, he decided to go for state office instead. He currently works as an aviation insurance broker in Omaha.
