Investigation Continues Into Holiday SNAFUs

DOT Wants To Hear From Comair, US Airways Passengers

If you were flying as a crew member or a passenger aboard either a Comair or US Airways flight, the Department of Transportation would like a word with you.

In the wake of the Christmas Day meltdown that left thousands of passengers stranded for the holiday, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta is pushing for a quick investigation into what happened and why -- and who's responsible.

As ANN reported last week, Comair's dispatch computer apparently crashed in such a way that all 1,100 Christmas Day flights had to be canceled. Thousands were stranded as late as Tuesday trying to get home for the holidays.

The problem at US Airways was a bit more insidious. Plagued by what one spokeswoman called "an unusually high level of sick calls" among flight attendants and baggage handlers -- most notably at Philadelphia International Airport -- the airline accidentally sent passengers' luggage anywhere but where it was supposed to go. While the airline said it didn't think it had an organized labor action on its hands, executives did promise to take action against anyone who sicked out without a good reason.
