Malibu Crashes in Naples (FL)

Pilot/Owner, Two Associates Killed

Right after takeoff Wednesday from the Naples (FL) Municipal Airport, the Piper Malibu went down, just ten yeads from the Collier County Humane Society, in its back yard.

Aboard were pilot Cavin Robert Councilor, 38, of Naples, and his passengers, Shawn Michael King, 31, of North Naples, and Charles Royden Scherer Jr., 37, of North Naples. Councilor and Scherer were pronounced dead at the scene; King survived a short time, from his seat behind the pilot; he died shortly after he was extricated from the wreck.

Some witnesses say there might have been engine trouble, before the plane was seen to "tip its wings and flip" to the ground, clipping some trees in the process. Others say there was no untoward noise, as the aircraft went into a steep left turn that continued to steepen, and then turned into a spin. Some said it looked like the airplane was trying to get back to the airport.
Councilor, according to those who knew him, flew quite frequently, both for his business, when he flew short hops; and for pleasure and vacations, where he flew long cross-countries. He had purchased the machine about two years ago, used. Wednesday's accident was a business trip, a quick trip to Satasota, where Councilor, who owned a paint and wallpaper company, was going with his friens, a general superintendent, and a project manager, to look at a cabinet company they were considering purchasing, according to The Naples Daily News. A fourth man was supposed to have joined them, but he showed up at the airport just about as the crash was happening.
