AFA Praises SCOTUS Decision On DOMA

Southwest Airlines Officially Recognizes Gay Pride Month

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA reacted positively to Wednesday's ruling the U.S. Supreme Court that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional, and striking down Proposition 8, the California law banning same-sex marriage.

"Today is a monumental day for women and men across the country who have entered into the institution of marriage but struggled for equal treatment under the law. The Supreme Court agrees with a majority of Americans that we must put an end to this shameful discrimination," the AFA said in a written statement.

"For decades, AFA's commitment to equal treatment of all individuals, regardless of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression has not wavered. We are hopeful that today's marriage equality decisions put our country on a path towards greater understanding and acceptance, and we will continue to advocate that same treatment for everyone."

At the same time, Southwest Airlines issued a statement recognizing Gay Pride Month. The airline said it proudly shows its dedication to the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community through the recognition of Gay Pride Month in June, and by ongoing organizational support all throughout the year.

"At Southwest Airlines, we are proud to partner with national and local LGBT-focused organizations that positively impact the communities we serve. Together, we focus on diversity and inclusion in all of our communities, and we champion the causes that matter most to our Customers and Employees," said Ellen Torbert, Southwest Airlines' Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion. "Gay Pride Month is a great time for us to show our continued commitment to the LGBT community, but Southwest Airlines is proud to engage with and give back to the LGBT community all throughout the year."
