Pilot, Dog Fatally Injured In Alaska Floatplane Accident

Aircraft Impacted Trees, Post-Impact Fire Ensued

The pilot of a floatplane was fatally injured Saturday in an accident in Anchorage, AK. A dog on board the aircraft was also killed.

The Anchorage Police Department identified the pilot as 75-year-old James Hefty, according to television station KTUU.

NTSB investigator Clint Johnson said that that the airplane "came in contact with a stand of trees. A post-crash fire incinerated most of the wreckage."

The plane came down near Crooked Tree Drive in Anchorage. The NTSB has been asking if there are any witnesses to the accident. "A lot of times here in Alaska we don’t have witnesses," Johnson said. But in this case, "We are blessed to have a number of witnesses that can tell us an estimation of engine power, and maneuvers that were being done before the crash.”

The initial NTSB investigation confirmed control continuity of the plane. An preliminary report may be issued as early as Thursday.
