Allied Pilots Association Elects New National Officers

Terms Began July 1

The Allied Pilots Association, certified collective bargaining agent for the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, has announced the final results of regularly scheduled elections for new national officers. The three-year terms of office begin on July 1, 2016.

Captain Daniel F. Carey will serve as APA President. Captain Carey received the most votes for president in the election round that concluded last month and became APA president-elect when the other remaining candidate for president withdrew from the runoff election. Hired by American Airlines in 1984, Captain Carey is based at New York’s LaGuardia Airport as a Boeing 777 international pilot. His previous APA experience includes serving as a negotiator and as a member of the union’s board of directors. Before joining American Airlines, he was a corporate pilot for El Paso Electric Company in El Paso, TX. Captain Carey completed the professional pilot program at Cochise College in Douglas, AZ, and is a resident of Ballyporeen, Ireland, and Rockville Centre, New York.

First Officer Timothy J. Hamel will serve as APA Vice President, winning a runoff election that concluded today. First Officer Hamel had been serving as the APA Interim Vice President, having been appointed to that position by the union’s board of directors on November 4, 2015, following the resignation of then-APA Vice President First Officer Neil Roghair. Hired by American Airlines in 1991, First Officer Hamel is a Dallas/Fort Worth-based Boeing 787 international pilot. His previous APA experience includes serving as chairman of the union’s scope committee, which monitors compliance with Section 1 of the APA-American Airlines Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement defining the pilots’ scope of work. Before joining American Airlines, First Officer Hamel served in the United States Air Force and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from California State University-Chico. He is a resident of Phoenix, AZ.

Captain Pam Torell was reelected to serve as APA Secretary-Treasurer. A Miami-based Boeing 737 international pilot, Captain Torell was hired by American Airlines in 1998 after flying for American Eagle and Atlantic Coast Airlines. Her previous APA experience includes serving on the union’s training and hotel committees and as chairman of its family awareness committee. Captain Torell also participated in critical incident stress management debriefings as a member of the union’s aeromedical committee after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and sociology from Western Maryland College, and lives in St. Lucie County, FL.
