Reports: Malaysia Airlines Flight Shot Down In Ukraine

Boeing 777 Had 280 Passengers, 15 Crew On Board

Reports are coming in from Ukraine that a Malaysia Airlines flight has been shot down near the Ukrainian-Russian border. The Boeing 777 is said to have had 280 passengers and 15 crew on board.

Malaysia Airlines has confirmed that it has lost contact with the flight.

The New York Daily News reports that the plane came down about 20 miles short of Russian airspace. Flight Aware indicates the flight had originated at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and was en route to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Reuters reports that sources indicate that the plane was hit by a ground-to-air missile. It was not immediately clear from where the missile was launched.

There are few other details. A video posted on YouTube shows a smoke plume coming from the area where the plane reportedly went down. An unidentified source told Reuters that the plane "began to drop" and it was later "found burning on the ground in Ukrainian territory."
