Cardinal Crashes In Tampa Ship Channel

Two Dead

Two men died Tuesday morning when their Cessna 177 Cardinal plunged into a Tampa (FL) shipping channel. The aircraft, whose point of origin and destination weren't immediately known, was near Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Island when it went down in as much as 45 feet of water.

Witnesses say the aircraft was flying low over Tampa Bay when it abruptly turned. That's when it hit the water.

The pilot had reportedly called in an emergency, saying his engine was backfiring. He requested an emergency landing at Peter O. Knight.

Divers immediately took to the water after the crash. They found one body in the Cardinal's left seat. The other body was in the rear of the aircraft. Tampa Police said the aircraft was largely intact.
