Austrian Authorities Report Near Collision Between UAV, Helicopter

Pilot Says Small Aircraft Passed Within Two Meters Of His Rescue Helo

The pilot of an Austrian medical transport helicopter with a patient on board reports that a UAV flew within about two meters of his aircraft while flying at about 5,000 feet of altitude.

The aircraft was en route to Klagenfurt hospital after picking up a 50-year-old patient who had been involved in a car crash, according to the Krone Zeitung newspaper. The pilot told the paper that he was flying at about 5,000 feet at 250 kilometers per hour when "I suddenly noticed something. It was a drone that was flying two meters from right to left under the helicopter."

The pilot was able to take evasive action and steer the helo out of the way to prevent a collision, according to the report.

Local authorities have not yet been able to identify the operator of the UAV, the paper reported.
