To Serve as FAA Chief Counsel

Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta appointed Andrew B. Steinberg as Chief Counsel for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

"Andy brings a wealth of experience in aviation to his new post as FAA’s chief legal officer," said Secretary Mineta. "His counsel will help the FAA as it moves forward on meeting its goals of enhancing the safety and capacity of our aviation system."

As Chief Counsel for the FAA, Steinberg will serve as the top legal advisor to the FAA Administrator, overseeing the agency’s legal staff in Washington and 11 field offices. He will be responsible for all aspects of the FAA’s legal responsibilities, including the agency’s regulatory program, administrative and judicial litigation, enforcement activities, legislation and legal relations with foreign civil aviation authorities.  Steinberg will also provide extensive legal support for the FAA’s procurement program, airports program and ethics compliance.

"Thanks to the support of the President and Secretary Mineta, I’m pleased to have someone of Andy’s high caliber join the FAA team," said Administrator Blakey. "His industry and private sector experience will be a valuable asset as we chart a course for aviation’s next century."

Steinberg has almost two decades of legal and aviation industry experience. Prior to his appointment, he served as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Church & Dwight, a diversified consumer packaged goods and industrial products company. He previously served as chief legal and administrative officer for online travel site Travelocity.com, and chief legal officer of Sabre, a leading provider of computerized reservation services and information technology solutions to the travel and transportation industry. As Associate General Counsel at American Airlines, he managed all employment counseling and litigation, as well as environmental legal matters for American and AMR affiliates.

Steinberg was graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School and earned his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Princeton University.
