Osama bin Laden Relatives Fatally Injured In U.K. Accident

Phenom 300 Apparently Overshot Runway, Impacted Cars In An Auction Lot

Three members of the family which had disowned Osama bin Laden were fatally injured in an accident Friday in which the Embraer Phenom 300 they were aboard went down on approach to Blackbushe Airport in Hampshire U.K. west of London.

CNN and other media sources report that the plane went down in a parking lot used by a car auction business on airport property. Three passengers, all thought to be members of the bin Laden family, and the pilot were fatally injured in the accident.

The Associated Press reports that the Saudi Ambassador to the U.K. confirmed that the passengers on board the aircraft were members of the extensive bin Laden family, but did not say which family members had been on board the aircraft. The Phenom 300 was of Saudi registry, and the family members were reportedly vacationing in the U.K. at the time of the accident.

Arab media has said that those on board were Osama bin Laden's stepmother, Rajaa Hashim, his sister Sana bin Laden and her husband, Zuhair Hashim.

The accident is being investigated by the U.K. AAIB.

One pilot interviewed by the U.K. newspaper The Mirror said that the plane should have been able to land safely at the airport. The Phenom reportedly overshot the 4,300-foot runway, but apparently did not attempt a go-around. Another witness said the airplane appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed.

The family, which owns a major construction company based in Saudi Arabia, had disowned Osama in 1994. Mohammed bin Laden, Osama's billionaire father, reportedly had more than 50 children.
