THAAD Works In Most Recent Test

Tests Now Move To Hawaii

Could this be a turn-around for THAAD?

The Army's Terminal High-Altitude Air Defense Missile system scored a recent victory over the White Sands Missile range, intercepting a Hera ballistic missile.

"It was quite spectacular," said Lockheed Martin vice president Tom McGrath to Military.com. "This flight main goal was to charge the seeker and have the radar perform discrimination [telling the target from background objects]. Both were completely successful. In addition, we did have an intercept."

This... after a number of failed intercepts and a seven-year hiatus for the $10 billion program, during which it was almost completely restructured.

But before that, THAAD missed in spectacular fashion during five back-to-back tests between 1995 and 1998. The Army had hoped to put the Lockheed-Martin system into operation as early as 1999.

With this latest victory, however, THAAD moves to Hawaii -- where it will be tested at the hands of Army-types, rather than contractors.
