In Effect Until Further Notice

NOTAM: 3/2149
Issued: 12/25/2003 00:42
Effective: Immediately - Until Further Notice
State: AK
Facility: ZAN - ANCHORAGE (ARTCC),AK.
Type: SECURITY
Description: VALDEZ, ALASKA.

The FAA has issued two TFRs for Valdez, Alaska. The first establishes a 1-nm-radius no-fly zone centered on 61 degrees 05' 06" North/146 degrees 23' 19" West. The second establishes a 25-nm-radius restricted area centered on Valdez/Pioneer Field (VDZ), latitude 61 degrees 08' North/146 degrees 15' West. Note they are NOT centered on the same point. Within the 25-nm area, pilots must first contact Juneau Flight Service Station with their call sign, position, altitude, and route of flight prior to entering the above area. Those pilots whose aircraft do not have two-way radio capability must pre-coordinate their operations with the Juneau Flight Service prior to entering the area.

"The government clearly has what it considers very real security concerns during this period of heightened alert status," said AOPA Senior Vice President Andy Cebula. "Pilots need to be conscious of that, check notams at the last possible moment before departing, and be aware that the situation may change while they're airborne."
