Airborne 08.07.19: More Icon Layoffs, US A220 Production, Flyboard Record

Also: Pilots Arrested, Bristow Group Reorganization, Planes Intercepted By NORAD, Banyan Aviation Career Day

Trying to paint itself as being less desperate than they seem to be, Icon Aircraft is trying to describe yet another round of layoffs as less drastic than they look... especially as the news keeps featuring one setback and/or embarrassment after another for the company and its much hyped airplane, the Icon A5.

Icon Aircraft has announced it will be "reducing employee headcount" as part of a revised business plan. The move lowers cost structure across the organization because of reduced demand for the ballooning price of the airplane. Airbus has officially begun manufacturing the A220 in the US. The first team of A220 production workers began work at Airbus’ Mobile, Alabama production facility following their recent return from training in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada, where the A220 program and primary final assembly line are located. Airbus announced plans for the addition of A220 manufacturing in Mobile in October 2017. Construction on the main A220 flowline hangar and other support buildings for the new A220 began at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley at the beginning of this year. The inventor of the Flyboard has successfully flown his machine across the English Channel, a 22-mile trip that lasted about 22 minutes. Zapata departed from Sangatte, near Calais, shortly after 0600 GMT Sunday, landing in St Margaret's Bay in Dover after a refueling stop during the trip. Zapata first attempted the crossing on July 25, but an issue refueling the Flyboard forced him to abandon the attempt. He ran out of fuel and ditched in the ocean before reaching the boat where he planned to switch backpacks for one with a full load of fuel. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
