Air Race Classic 2022 Coming To An Airport Near You

The 2022 Air Race Classic, begins in Lakeland Florida, and terminates in Terre Haute, Indiana during the timeframe 21-24 Jun 2022.

This year, organizers have confirmed that 50 teams from 35 states, including 13 colleges/universities, and two teams with multi-generational members! Beginning at 0800 on day 1, 115 hopefuls will take to the skies, navigating some 2,548 miles across 12 states with 8 planned stops: Moultrie (MGR), GA; Muscle Shoals (MSL), AL; Hattiesurg (HBG), MS; Pine Bluff (PBF), AR; Ada (ADH) OK; Lawrence (LWC) KS; Mount Vernon (MVN), IL; Tullahoma (THA), TN; Washington (DCY); Terre Haute (HUF), IN). At each stop, racers will execute a high-speed low-pass over a timing line!

The Air Race Classic began life in 1929 as the Powder Puff Derby, in which Amelia Earhart and 19 other female pilots raced from Santa Monica, CA to Cleveland, OH.

It was later renamed the Women’s Air Derby and finally the Air Race Classis that it is today. As before, the competition is only open to female pilots, with a team of two or more women pilots, with private pilot of higher certificate, 100 hours PIC (by race day), medical/BasicMed, current flight review, PIC/SIC should have 500 hours and be instrument current. Additional team-mate can be student or higher with at least 5 hours airplane time.

There are two classes of entry: competition and non-competition, where the first is eligible to receive awards and prizes, whereas, the second accommodate those whose pilot certificates or airplanes do not meet the primary requirements. Other rules and requirements may be found on the event website. Volunteers are always welcomed, and signups are available for each event!
