Police Helo Down In Japan

Five Officers And Crew Members Lost

An Agusta A109-K2 helicopter flown by police in central Japan went down Tuesday, killing all five officers on board, authorities said. There was no immediate word on the cause of the mishap.

The aircraft wasn't even supposed to fly that day, according to police in Shizuoka, about 95 miles west of Tokyo. It replaced one that suffered a minor malfunction earlier in the day.

The officers aboard the aircraft were monitoring holiday traffic during Japan's "Golden Week" celebration, according to police. There was no warning from the pilot of trouble before the crash, investigators said.

Although the aircraft clipped an apartment on its way down, no one on the ground was hurt.
