AeroSports Update: Discovery XL-2 Production Is Underway

Discovery Aviation Announced That Production Of The New Discovery XL-2 Has Started

If you are looking for a newly manufactured 2-place airplane suitable for the private owner or for flight a school, it seems like we have to aim towards the light sport aircraft (LSA). However, Discovery Aviation shows us there is another way to go with the FAR Part 23 certified Discovery XL-2.

Since acquiring the Liberty XL-2 in April 2014, the Discovery Team has worked to return the XL-2 to production. With most of the Liberty XL-2 team staying on after the acquisition, vendors and suppliers approved, and the Type Certificate and Production Certificate transferred, discovery is introducing the new and improved Discovery XL-2.

Discovery says there XL-2 single engine, two-place aircraft is economical to fly and easy to maintain. Its fuselage is formed from carbon fiber with a welded steel chassis. They claim the Discovery XL-2 is an airplane that works hard, is economical to operate and maintain, and offers lower operating costs.

The Discovery XL-2 is designed with large maintenance access panels and a modular design. Discovery claims the XL-2 can be maintained for 40% less than its nearest competitor. It features the capability to download and diagnose every minute of the engine’s life with their life-time engine monitoring system. The Discovery XL-2 is powered by a Continental IOF-240B with FADEC, producing 125 hp.

The XL-2 flies at 125 knots for 500 miles, at about 5.0 gallons per hour of fuel. The FADEC system continuously monitors and adjusts engine settings to assure the maximum efficiency in any flight condition. The Discovery XL-2 interior and exterior is designed for efficiency, comfort and safety. It features Gullwing doors and the canopy offers 270 degrees of visibility. The 48 inch wide cabin gives pilot and passenger ample elbow room.  Rudder pedals are adjustable, and flight controls are located on the center console which can be reached from either pilot position.

Standard avionics include a Garmin GTN650 Nav/Com, a GMA350 Audio panel, a GTX 33 Transponder, a GI 106A CDI/GS and a MD200-306 CDI/GS. Additional avionics are available that include a Garmin G500 Dual Screen Electronic Flight Display, a DME, an ADF or an Autopilot.
