RAF Purchases Sixth C-17 Globemaster III

Transport Aircraft Can Carry A BIG Load

Britain's Royal Air Force has purchased its sixth C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft. The contract with Boeing, for a 130-million pounds, or about $260 million, was announced Monday.

The Globemaster is aptly named. It has a capacity of 75 metric tonnes, a range of up to 2,400 nautical miles, and can land on unpaved airfields in remote, land-locked regions.

The RAF notes one C-17 can carry the equivalent of three Warrior armoured vehicles, 13 Land Rovers, one Chinook twin-rotor helicopter, or three Apache gunships.

"Our existing C-17s have already proved their worth around the world supporting UK operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in providing humanitarian aid after the Tsunami in SE Asia and the earthquake in Pakistan," said Baroness Taylor, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support.

The new C-17 is scheduled to enter service in summer 2008. The RAF purchased four leased aircraft and a fifth C-17 last summer.
