FAA Approves Flight ID Enhancement For Collins Transponder

Solution Can Save Owner/Operator Up $15,000, According To Shadin Avionics

The FAA has approved a Flight ID enhancement for the Collins TDR-94/94D Transponder developed by CMD Flight Solutions. This solution saves up to $15,000 depending on current equipage, the company says.

CMD joined forces with Shadin Avionics to add the ADS-B Out Flight ID Adapter(AFID) to solve the Flight ID problem. The AFID allows the tail number (or any other fixed value) to be entered at the time of installation or registration change via a simple OLED display and pushbuttons. Similar to the Mode S code, just set it and forget it. For operators who file flight plan under their tail number the solution is a very attractive alternative to other more costly approaches.

“With Shadin’s certifiable AIS-360 platform and technical expertise, CMD has been able to address the Flight ID integration problem challenging a number of aircraft in the worldwide fleet as the ADS-B Out mandate grows closer” stated Dan Buzz, President, CMD Flight Solutions. “We expect the AFID to be an extremely important component for our STCs going forward and potentially other concepts we are thinking about to help keep the cost of ADS-B Out within reason.”

CMD Flight Solutions’ STCs now cover nearly every aircraft equipped with Rockwell Collins TDR-94/94D Transponders and the Honeywell Primus II Radio Suite with a number of WAAS GPS sources, Universal UNS-1(-)W FM, Collins GPS-4000S, FreeFlight 1203C, Honeywell GNSSU and the Bendix King KGS-200.

Shadin Avionics, The AFID, is part of a growing family of ADS-B solutions utilizing Shadin’s AIS-360 flight worthy and certifiable data convertor platform. Other products in the AIS family include the AIS-460 MIL-STD-1553 platform, AIS-450 Digital/Synchro platform, AIS-380 Analog/Digital platform, AIS-800 Engine platform and the AIS-100 USB QAR platform.
