Airline Pilot Hiring Outpacing Forecasts

Total hiring has already rocketed past initial estimates by more than ten percent

At the beginning of 2004, airlines reporting to AIR, Inc. forecasted hiring a total of 4,300 pilots. With only a half-year behind us, the airlines have already topped that figure at 4,876, 133 more than were hired in 2003!

National carriers had the highest hiring volume in June with 359 pilots, followed by the Jet operators with 181, and the Non-jet division finished third with 114. Feeder airlines will continue their hiring spurt throughout the rest of the year. National airlines have forecasted hiring an additional 1,200 pilots, Jet Operators will add more than 500, and the Non-Jet division will put approximately 250 into the cockpit. Furlough levels showed a 7.5 percent increase in June over the same period last year, but decreased 1.67 percent from 9,721 in May to 9,562 in June.

AIR, Inc. is set to host its largest Pilot Job Fair and Seminar September 17-19, at the Hilton McLean Tysons corner in Washington, DC.
