United Cutting More Flights Next Month

War, SARS -- It's Never Industry Overcapacity

Yesterday, United anounced that it would trim another nearly 4% from its flight schedule, citing continued fears over the armed conflict in Iraq, and increased fears about SARS. The airline was clear that these cuts, while they will decrease service to some cities here and in Europe and Asia, will not eliminate any cities currently in United's net.

Personnel cuts consistent with the reduced schedule will be announced; those cut will go on unpaid leave.

Although United blamed the cuts on fighting and disease, the schedule cuts are mostly domestic: compare the 24 international flights' being eliminated, vs the 105 domestic flights that are getting the plug pulled.

The bankrupt airline somehow did not cite 'industry overcapacity' as a problem, when it announced the further schedule reduction.
