Two People Fatally Injured In Oregon Mid-Air

Two Planes Collided Near A State Park Tuesday

A mid-air collision in Oregon Tuesday resulted in the fatal injury of both people aboard the aircraft that was struck.

The accident occurred about 1600 PDT Tuesday. The preliminary report from the FAA indicates that the aircraft which went down was a V35 Bonanza with two people on board. The other aircraft was a Piper PA44. The Piper, which according to a report from the Associated Press was engaged in a flight training exercise, executed a safe emergency landing on a nearby road. The student was reportedly practicing emergency descent procedures when the accident occurred.

The plane which was struck reportedly broke into several pieces, and the debris field was spread across both sides of the Willamette River which runs adjacent to Champoeg State Park. Witnesses said they saw the plane come down nose-first at the base of some trees and catch fire.
