Two Fatally Injured In CA VariEze Accident

Went Down Between Ventura And Santa Paula Saturday

Two people on board a VariEze airplane were fatally injured Saturday when the plane went down in an orchard between Santa Paula and Ventura in southern California.

The two have been identified by the Ventura County (CA) Medical Examiner as 61-year-old Edgar Friederichs of Castaic and Matthew Boutell, 21, who lived in Thousand Oaks, CA.

The Ventura County Star reports that the plane had departed from Santa Paula Airport, and went down in the orchard. Friederichs was reportedly flying the VariEze at the time of the accident. Witnesses said they heard the engine "cutting out", and the airplane hit power lines before impacting the ground.

The NTSB's preliminary report should be available by mid-June.
