Downed U2 Pilot Identified

But Officials Still Won't Pinpoint Crash Site

The Pentagon Thursday identified the pilot lost when his U2 reconnaissance aircraft went down in Southwest Asia. Officially, no one would actually say where the aircraft went down -- only that it crashed on a mission supporting troops in Afghanistan.

The pilot was identified as 43-year old USAF Major Duane W. Dively of Rancho Cordova, CA. He was assigned to the 1st reconnaissance Squadron at California's Beale Air Force Base.

The cause of Wednesday's crash was still under investigation on Friday morning. While officials wouldn't say exactly where the aircraft went down, one military source who asked not to be identified said the spy plane crashed in the United Arab Emirates. He also said there was no indication the high-flying aircraft was brought down by hostile fire.
