Stewart International Able to Repair Pavement Cracks

On August 13, The Port Authority of New York announced that Stewart International Airport will be receiving $24,126,158 from the FAA. This grant funds their previous restoration of two damaged runways.

“This $24+ million federal grant will literally pave the way for improved safety at Stewart International Airport, helping efforts to repair cracks in thousands of feet of runway pavement reach new heights. This is especially timely with winter months approaching,” said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Stewart International Airport is located in Orange County, New York. It is an underused alternative to larger, busier commercial airports in the area.

The grant covers the costs of a 2017 restoration project. It repaired cracks in 11,817 feet of pavement of runway 9-27 and 6,004 feet of runway 16-34. In this same project, the Port Authority installed environmentally friendly LED lights to increase operational safety at night. 

The funding for New York Stewart stems from the latest set of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants. This project provides over $3.35 billion annually to 3,300 of the nation’s airports. These awards can be used for pollution reduction, energy efficiency upgrades, sustainable aviation fuel, or infrastructure repair.

“We thank the congressional delegation on both sides of the Hudson River for their continued support and recognition of the vital importance of New York Stewart to this region and within the larger Port Authority airport network through this important grant award,” said Kevin O’Toole, Port Authority Chairman.  “Runways are the arteries of an airport, so making sure they remain in a state of good repair is critical.”
