Helicopter Accident Leaves Pilot In Critical Condition

Aircraft Impacted A Barn In Rural Minnesota

A 71-year-old pilot is in critical condition after the helicopter he was flying impacted a barn in Ripley Township north of Little Falls, MN Wednesday.

The pilot is identified as Gary Earl Oleen of St. Cloud, MN, according to the Brainerd Dispatch. He was reportedly trapped inside the aircraft for about 20 minutes while emergency crews worked to extricate him. They were hampered by a fire danger caused by fuel and oil spilled at the accident site, as well as the threat of the roof of the structure collapsing during the process.

Oleen had been hired by the owner of the farm to spray crops. The aircraft reportedly went through the roof of the structure.

Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel said the emergency crews "did an outstanding job of quickly and safely removing the victim from the wreckage under extremely dangerous and challenging conditions."
