EAA Honors 'Bud' Anderson: A True Aviation Legend

Memorial Garden and Museum Dedicated to War Hero 'Triple Ace'

Brigadier General Clarence “Bud” Anderson, known as a "triple ace," is a decorated war hero and a beloved figure in the aviation community. In recognition of his legacy, Oshkosh has begun the development of a memorial garden in his honor. The project, currently in Phase 1 of 3, was officially announced on July 22, 2025, during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

Bud Anderson holds a legendary status at Oshkosh and within aviation. A highly decorated World War II veteran, Bud flew the P-51 Mustang as part of the renowned 357th Fighter Group. More than just a pilot, he was a cherished friend, mentor, and icon. His frequent appearances at Oshkosh were met with joy by all, where he was not just a participant but a true celebrity, always willing to take photos and engage with fans of all ages.

The Memorial Garden and accompanying museum serve as a tribute to Bud’s lasting impact. Though still under construction, the initiative has gained tremendous support. Through the generosity of sponsors and Warbird members, including substantial donations totaling approximately $50,000 from three individuals among many more donors. The vision is steadily becoming a reality. The museum will feature a collection of Bud’s aviation gear and photographs, preserving his legacy for future generations.

Interviews with several of Bud’s colleagues from EAA Warbirds highlighted his humility and kindness. Despite his legendary status, Bud treated everyone, whether a close friend or a stranger, with open arms. One member recalled, “We had never had a main speaker visit our section of the Warbirds, but Bud stayed out in the heat with us, examining all our equipment. It meant the world to us.” These moments reveal how deeply Bud touched the lives of those around him.

While this garden stands as a tribute to Bud, the Warbirds community envisions it as a broader place of remembrance, one that honors all fallen heroes of aviation. With continued dedication, it will become a space for reflection, inspiration, and legacy for generations to come.
