Homebuilt Anniversaries to be Celebrated at Oshkosh

Classic, Vintage Homebuilts to Reach 50th, 60th Anniversaries

This year's EAA AirVenture will see the celebration of a few popular and historic kitplane designs - and owners are invited to come celebrate in Oshkosh, Wisconsin!

The 69th annual fly-in will be the year's largest gathering of amateur-built aircraft in the world, bringing around 10,000 planes from around the world to gather with every part of the industry, from fellow pilots and owners to the designers and manufacturers themselves.

This year, a series of anniversaries will take place, including the half-century anniversaries for the Acro Sport, an aerobatic biplane designed by EAA founder Paul Poberezny, the automotive-powered KR-1, the VariViggen, and the classic Van's RV. The VariViggen represents one of Burt Rutan's most inimitable designs, a distinctive silhouette at airports across the country to this day. The rare Dyke Delta, and affordable Fly Baby will celebrate their 60th anniversaries, too. Owners are encouraged to pre-register as soon as possible, given the limited extent of parking, special events, and type-specific flight line arrangements that may be in the works. For owners with classic kitplanes, AirVenture is probably the only time they could see even one more of their same make and model, not to mention a dozen.

“Many of our members build their own airplanes from kits or sets of plans and each year, more than 1,000 of these amateur-built aircraft are among the 10,000-plus aircraft that arrive here for AirVenture,” said Charlie Becker, EAA’s homebuilt community manager. “In 2022, several popular designs are celebrating their anniversaries, and we invite all owners of those aircraft to come to Oshkosh to help commemorate the occasion.”
