Montana Legislature Moves To Severely Restrict Drone Operations

Would Ban Most Flights Over Private Property, Including Deliveries

A bill making its way through the Montana Senate would make it illegal for a drone to fly at an altitude of under 500 feet over most private property without the explicit permission of the landowner.

The Missoulian newspaper reports that the bill would make drone delivery services illegal in the state.

The bill, which was introduced by State Senator Steve Hinebauch (R-Wilbaux) passed the full Montana Senate 30-19.

When asked about delivery services, Hinebauch said that delivery drones could follow existing roads rather than fly in point-to-point to their destinations. If they flew over private property, the delivery company should be fined, he said.

The bill has not yet been considered in the Montana house.
