Cirrus Introduces SR20-G2

The Evolution Continues

Cirrus Design Corporation has announced the much-anticipated SR20-G2. The SR20-G2 is the second generation of the SR20 aircraft design that originally propelled Cirrus into the certified aircraft business in 1998. The 200 horsepower SR20-G2 was redesigned with the enhancements of the SR22-G2 that was unveiled at Sun 'n Fun earlier this year. Although many of the airframe refinements may be too subtle for only the truest Cirrus aficionados to detect (like the redesigned vertical stabilizer), the obvious interior refinements clearly set a new industry standard. The SR20-G2, and VFR-only variant SRV-G2, have many new features that improve comfort for pilots and serviceability for the numerous flight schools beginning to operate them. The following is a list of the latest enhancements to the SR20-G2.

Product Enhancements
  • Glass Cockpit - First introduced in 2002 and standard equipment on every Cirrus model, the Cirrus glass cockpit includes the 10.4" Avidyne FlightMax® Entegra Primary Flight Display, a 10.4" FlightMax® Multi-Function Display plus up to two additional 5" display Garmin® GPS receivers. The Cirrus glass cockpit is the first personal aviation system to have the autopilot integrated with the PFD to provide such functions as altitude pre-select, altitude hold and vertical speed select. The MFD displays navigation functions for flight planning, en route, waypoint and destination information, engine monitoring, real time lightning information, traffic alerts and shaded terrain and obstacle data.  New functionality offered in the Cirrus glass cockpit includes an electronic ground proximity warning system, satellite datalink weather and electronic approach plates displayed on the MFD.

  • Secure Latch™ Doors - A distinct new automotive-style door design allows the two oversized doors to be closed with less effort.  A single movement closes, latches and secures the door in two locations. Opening the door is ingeniously accomplished from the outside by simply pressing a button. Even the baggage door has been upgraded to Secure Latch.
  • New Interior - The renowned ergonomics of the Cirrus cabin are complemented by a choice of four seat styles in contemporary colors.  Other elegant interior refinements include the leather wrapped side-yoke, throttle lever and grab handles and fluid use of a new composite material called Soft Touch™.
  • New Cowl - The SR20-G2 cowl has been reengineered to provide improved airflow management by refining the shape and diminishing the size of the exhaust contours.  Additionally the oil access door has been redesigned for a more streamlined look.
  • General Enhancements - The cumulative effect of dozens of product refinements and manufacturing process improvements created an entirely new fuselage. The investment in precision tooling that helps reduce manufacturing time ultimately improves the consistency of the high-quality product.

Serviceability Enhancements
  • New Two-Piece Lower Cowling - A redesigned lower cowl simplifies removal and installation for servicing.  A new high-intensity headlight has also been reconfigured into the lower cowl.
  • Enhanced Wing Spar Access - In an effort to improve access to the hardware that connects wing spar to the fuselage, the lower wing fairing is now attached with fasteners rather than bonding.
  • Convenient Tail Access - Already revered by A&Ps for easy access to critical areas, the SR20-G2 and SRV-G2 now have an access door on the right side of the fuselage for greater access and flexibility for future options.
  • Improved CAPS Access - Routine inspections of the CAPS has also been improved for A&Ps as a result of the total fuselage redesign.

The SR22-G2 introduction at Sun 'n Fun on April 12, 2004 was well received by customers and has undoubtedly helped Cirrus retain a leadership position in 4 place piston engine sales. "SR20-G2 order holders will be equally pleased with the refined 200 horsepower model," stated Alan Klapmeier, chief executive officer and president of Cirrus. Although the wings are different between SR20 and SR22, the second-generation product line shares a common fuselage and all of the improvements in quality, fit and finish. Klapmeier added, "We will continue to explore ways to improve the value of Cirrus product and the Cirrus ownership experience as the evolution of Cirrus continues."
