British Say Herc Not Downed By Sabotage

Discounts Published Reports Saying Bomb Was Planted On Board

British military authorities are denying a report in the Sun tabloid that a bomb planted on board a C-130 transport aircraft caused it to crash near Baghdad January 30th.

A report by the RAF, however, left open the possibility that the aircraft may have been shot down by insurgents.

The Hercules went down northwest of Baghdad January 30th, killing all ten people on board -- nine RAF troops and one soldier. It was the UK's largest single loss of life since the invasion of Iraq in March, 2003.

Shortly after the January 30th mishap, Iraqi insurgents released a video claiming to show the shoot-down of the C-130. The veracity of that shaky video, however, has not been verified.
