FAA Inspector Arrested At Security Checkpoint

Rule Allowing FAA Employees To Bypass Security Suspended After A Loaded Handgun Was Found In Inspector's Carry-On Bag

A rule allowing FAA employees to skip security checkpoints at airports has been suspended by the agency after a loaded handgun was found in the carry-on bag of one of the agency's inspectors boarding a plane at LaGuardia Airport.

The FAA employee was arrested last Tuesday, according to a Reuters report appearing on AirWise.com. The incident caused FAA Administrator Michael Huerta to temporarily suspend the rule and increase security training for employees that travel for the agency.

The inspector, based in Atlanta, had reportedly bypassed a checkpoint at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta using his Security Identification Display Area badge earlier in his trip, but the handgun was discovered at a normal security checkpoint at LaGuardia. ABC News reports that TSA is investigating the incident.

The inspector has not been terminated by the FAA, but has reportedly been reassigned to "non-safety related duties" according to a statement released by the agency.
