Brazilian Lawmaker's Plane Missing

Disappeared 15 Minutes After Take-Off

Where is Jose Carlos Martinez? Where are his three companions? Authorities in Brazil very much want to know.

Martinez and three others including the pilot were aboard the aircraft when it took off from Curitiba, about 220 miles southwest of Sao Paulo, at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, on their way to a fishing trip.

Controllers say they lost touch with the aircraft. Its type and manufacturer weren't immediately released.

Searchers left on foot almost immediately, authorities said, but it was slow going because of bad weather in the area.

While the aircraft carried an ELT and was equipped with a transponder, no emergency signals were received by air traffic controllers. So far, Martinez's disappearance is a mystery. There's been no communication from the aircraft. Then again, no wreckage has been found, either.
