Astronauts Board Shuttle

So Far, So Good

REAL TIME UPDATE: 1040 EDT -- The space shuttle Discovery successfully launched from the Kennedy Space Center at 1039 Tuesday morning -- exactly on schedule.

With no countdown holds and no weather glitches, the space shuttle Discovery was "all systems go" for launch on Tuesday. The shuttle's crew, up since 0030 Tuesday morning (could you have slept?), boarded the orbiter for the second time since July 13th, when their mission was scrubbed because of a faulty fuel sensor in the main external fuel tank.

"So far, everything is working and that is good," said NASA launch commentator George Diller.

The 1039 scheduled launch was preceded early Tuesday morning by a test of the suspect sensor -- there were no problems. A second test conducted just before the astronauts boarded was also trouble-free.
