BASE Jumper Fatally Injured In Portugal

Jumped From A 330-Foot Cliff, Parachute Failed To Open

A 50-year-old BASE German BASE jumper was fatally injured last week when he jumped from a 330-foot cliff in Portugal and his parachute failed to open.

The German newspaper The Bild reports that Dominik Loyen from North Rhine-Westphalia was well known in the BASE jumping community, and he frequently filmed his jumps. He filmed the fatal accident jump, which took place in the surfing town of Nazare.

The video shows Loyen falling towards the ground, and impacts the rocks at the bottom of the cliff at full speed. Bild reports that at the point the parachute opened.

Loyen was a BASE jumping instructor, but had at times thought about taking a break or giving up the sport. He told Deutsche Welle in 2014 that he considered stopping after a friend was fatally injured in a jump.

Loyen moved from Germany to Switzerland in 2005 to take advantage of that country's less stringent regulations governing BASE jumping.
