Report: ANA Considers MRJ Purchase To Build Regional Fleet

Mitsubishi Needs 350 Orders To Launch Project

The Jiji News Agency, based in Tokyo, reports what may be a big boost for Mitsubishi's forthcoming regional jet.

All Nippon Airways and its affiliates are reportedly considering the purchase of about 30 MRJs, which would mark a departure from the airline's current, exclusively-Bombardier regional jet fleet.

Airline spokesman Toshiki Yamamoto says All Nippon is studying purchases from perspectives including cost and capacity, but that nothing has been decided. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has declined to comment.

Mitsubishi had previously announced an ambitious, 150 billion yen ($1.4 billion) development effort, and an expectation to reach 20 per cent market penetration with its new regional jet, selling 1,000 planes over a 20-to-30-year timeframe. The market is currently dominated by Canada's Bombardier Inc. and Brazil's Embraer.

As ANN reported, Mitsubishi anticipates a final decision on development of the plane this spring, and hopes to have it flying in 2012. The company reportedly needs 350 orders to consider the project viable.

Pratt & Whitney has already been chosen to supply engines for the plane, which would be the first regional jet to make extensive use of composite components. Rockwell Collins has been signed to provide avionics, and flight control systems.
