Amazon Eyes Air Freight Service

Online Retailer Reportedly Looking To Lease 767 Freighters

Online retail giant Amazon.com could be looking into bringing its shipping in-house with the lease of 20 Boeing 767 freighter aircraft.

USA Today relays reports from the shipping news site CargoFacts and The Seattle Times that indicated Amazon is in the process of building a logistics system that would include overnight air freight in the U.S.  The company has been flying five 767s a week out of Wilmington, OH for several months, according to a supply chain management firm.

The company currently mostly relies on FedEx, UPS, and the U.S. Postal Service for its deliveries. The report says that establishing its own logistics system would increase capacity, allow it to control the delivery schedules, and establish a revenue stream by selling excess capacity.

The company would have to lease its aircraft, as it does not have an Air Operator's Certificate, according to The Seattle Times.

Both Amazon and Boeing were mum on a potential deal.
