Iranian Airliner Down

250+ Aboard

State television in Tehran, Iran, has released a few facts about a Wednesday airliner crash in the southern part of the country.

An Antonov airliner carrying "at least 250" people (with some reports saying 270), enroute from Zahedan to Kerman, lost radio contact at around 5:30PM local time. It crashed in mountainous terrain near its destination, near the town of Shadad.

One report said the plane's complement was nearly entirely comprised of Revolutionary Guards, returning from "an important mission" in the east, near the Pakistan border. If that indeed turns out to be the case, our headline should change to "Iranian Troop Transport Down." It also makes identification of the Antonov "airliner" a bit less troublesome.

No reports of the airline, the type of Antonov used, or casualties from the airplane or on the ground, had been released, by press time.
