AirVenture Cinema

Take A Break

By John Dorcey

It's not the size of Theatre in the Woods or showing first run movies, but the Flying Cinema is a rare treat for the flying movie buff. Northeast of the NASA building, the theatre is located in the south end of the Activities Center.

The 24-seat auditorium is small but cozy. Two screens, albeit small ones, provide unobstructed viewing from any seat. Movie showings began on Sunday, July 24 and continue through Sunday, July 31.

Featured movies include such names as John Wayne, Van Johnson, Spencer Tracey, and Mel Gibson. Real life pilot stars include Cliff Robertson, James Stewart, Dennis Quaid, and Christopher Reeve.

What kind of movies can you expect to see at the Flying Cinema? Well, as might be assumed from the theatre's title - movies with a flying theme. Titles include: Air America, The Flight of the Phoenix (the original), Flight of the Intruder, 1941, Top Gun, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, China Clipper; a total of more than 21 classic movies in all.

For some theatregoers the reason for going to the movies is not what's playing but the fact that there is a roof over their heads, a dry floor, and air conditioning. Others find the dark and quiet just the place to catch up some much needed sleep. Sounds like a typical neighborhood movie house, doesn't it?

Looking for a place to rest those tired feet, to escape the heat (or rain) or maybe to watch a really good movie? The Flying Cinema really should be added to your already busy AirVenture schedule.
