Aero-TV: Sounds Like Privacy -- Acousticom's Sound Egg

Can You Hear Me????

Acousticom traces its roots back three decades to October, 1980, when Ben and Jean Cochran set out to supply high quality audio and communication products to government and industry.

If you use a rebuilt military-style aviation headset or helmet, you may have personal experience with products found in the Acousticom catalog. Mark Cochran took over as president in 2005, making this a second-generation family business.

In January, 2010, the company debuted its first general-market consumer product, The Sound Egg, at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Built in the shape of an egg on a pedestal, the specialized chair surrounds the user with a 10" subwoofer and five other speakers in an optimal arrangement for reproducing 5.1 surround sound, while blocking ambient noise and controlling "bounce" with acoustic foam inner wall treatment.

An instant hit with gamers and movie fans, The Acoustic Egg broke through to the aviation market at Oshkosh in July, where every pilot who sat in it seemed to have the same first thought - "flight simulator."

The enclosure not only attenuates ambient sound, but also blocks visual distractions from the left and right. Aero TV got a closer look - and listen - at AirVenture.
