Sudanese Air Official Tenders Resignation Over Aircraft Accident

Antonov AN-26 Impacted Terrain Resulting In 32 Fatal Injuries

The official in charge of the Sudanese Civil Aviation Corporation (SCAC) has offered to resign following an accident that fatally injured 32 people Sunday. Among those lost were one federal and three state ministers.

The aircraft, a chartered Antonov A-26, impacted the side of a mountain in poor weather conditions and exploded. The officials were on their way to a religious service in the town of Talodi in South Kofdofan.

The Sudan Tribune reports that the SCAC minister, Mohammed Abdel Aziz, tendered his resignation Tuesday to President Omer Al-Basir. It was not immediately know if the President had accepted the resignation. Abdel Aziz said the incident was a "national disaster" which required him to step down. He also said he would be ready to answer any charges brought as a result of the accident.

The French news service AFP reports that the captain of the Antonov was a Russian citizen, which was confirmed by the Russian Embassy.

Early reports indicated that the aircraft that went down had been a helicopter.
