Two Army Helicopters Down In Training Mission, Four Fatally Injured

Not Clear If The Aircraft Were Involved In A Mid-Air, Or Separate Accidents

The U.S. Army is reporting that two Kiowa Warrior helicopters have gone down during a training mission Monday at Joint Base Lewis McChord south of Tacoma, WA. Four service members were fatally injured when the aircraft went down.

The accident happened about 2000 PST in the southwest portion of the base. The Associated Press reports that an Army safety officer said that the airmen were engaged in a "routine night training" exercise, but did now have specifics about the accident.

The aircraft were both OH-58D Kiowa Warriors, which are used primarily for armed reconnaissance. It was not immediately clear whether the aircraft were involved in a mid-air collision, or if they went down separately. The Army has not yet identified the fatally-injured soldiers pending notification of next of kin.
