Israeli Company Hopes To Defend US Civil Fleet

IAI's Elta Hopes To Sell Anti-Missile Systems In 2004

Flying the Raytheon flag, a subsidiary of Israeli Aircraft Industries says it will be licensed to start selling missile-defense systems to civil carriers next year.

Elta managing director Israel Livnat says the FAA will approve the system, called Safe Flight, within six months. Elta detects missile threats to airliners, while Raytheon will supply the systems for defeating missiles.  That system will most likely use flares as diversions.

The system will be priced at $1.5 million. Elta said that the system would operate automatically -- cockpit crews would have to do nothing.  Elta Electronics, an IAI subsidiary, says that would mean no extra training for flight deck crews.
