Aero-News Alert: Air France/Brit Air CRJ-100 Down, Fatalities Reported

Aircraft Went Down During Approach, No Reason Yet Given

An Air France/Brit Air CRJ-100, Flight AF 5672, went down early Monday morning in Brest, France.

Current reports indicate that a pilot has been killed and at least three others, including a flight crew-person (thought to be the First Officer), have been injured. There were 21 people and three crew reported on board. A European media report quotes moderately low ceilings and approximately half mile visibility at the time of the accident, with thunderstorms reported in the area.

The aircraft impacted the area short of the runway in western France about a half mile short of the threshold at the Brest-Guipavas airport. The aircraft was enroute from Nantes and was operated for Air France by French regional airline, Brit Air. The aircraft broke up on impact, splitting the fuselage in two. A fire ensued and was contained by local crash/fire rescue personnel.

The CRJ-100, F-GRJS (shown above), was assembled by Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. The CRJ-100 series has a fairly enviable record with only one other reported accident in service, and one in testing.
