North Dakota Advances UAS Network Toward Commercialization

Vantis Network Leads Nation in BVLOS Testing And Development

The North Dakota Development Fund (NDDF) announced it will establish a new state-run entity to further the commercialization of its Vantis UAS network. The entity will work to attract partnerships with the goal of generating revenue for the state.

North Dakota is one of the leading centers in the country for developing and testing uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and is home to a thriving and growing number of research, military, and commercial entities. Its Vantis network is a statewide UAS infrastructure system that enables flights Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS). It is the first UAS infrastructure network of its kind in the nation.

Commerce Commissioner Josh Teigen said, "North Dakota stands at the forefront of UAS integration. By commercializing Vantis, we can offer mature digital aviation services – validated through years of Northern Plains UAS Test Site (NPUASTS) activities – further propelling North Dakota's industries and shaping the future of AI/Autonomy."

The NDDF has active partnerships with the Northern Plains Unmanned Systems Authority, Grand Sky Business and Aviation Park, Northrop Grumman, General Atomics, and about 50 other companies based in the state. The North Dakota Aeronautics Commission is closely involved in promoting the state’s aviation, aerospace, and UAS economy and safety. The state’s Office of the Adjutant General is a crucial link to the development of military applications. North Dakota also fosters a robust high-tech business climate that creates collaborations resulting in new business opportunities.
